About the event
On the Center Stage Screen, the Orcas Center presents Salome, one of opera’s most incendiary and gripping works. Based on a brief biblical account, the story follows a young princess of Judea who dances for her stepfather, Herod, and in return, demands the head of the prophet John the Baptist.
The tale has captivated generations of visual artists, but it found its fullest dramatic expression in Oscar Wilde’s 1891 play—so provocative it was banned in several countries. Richard Strauss’s haunting and powerful score fuses the sweeping grandeur of Wagner with the raw emotional intensity of Italian verismo opera, delivering an unforgettable experience on stage and screen.
